Is it important to enjoy the work you do?
While some people might say their job is “just a job” that “pays the bills,” we believe it’s better to do work you’re at least somewhat interested in!
This perspective can profoundly impact your career satisfaction and overall happiness.
When you enjoy what you do, you’re not just earning a paycheck; you’re investing your time and energy into something that resonates with your values and passions.
The Power of Passion: Marcus’ Story
Let’s look at a real-life example.
Meet Marcus, who worked as a cleaner.
At first, it seemed like the perfect job for him – he could work long hours and earn enough to support his family.
He enjoyed the solitude of the work and didn’t need to use much English, which was helpful due to his limited language skills.
However, over time, boredom set in, and Marcus began to feel trapped in his role.
His motivation waned, leading to feelings of depression and dissatisfaction.
Everything changed when he met with a career coach who encouraged him to explore his hobbies and interests.
At first, Marcus was sceptical about discussing his interests, but he eventually revealed his lifelong passion for trains – a love that sparked excitement in him.
Seeing Marcus light up while talking about trains, the coach had an idea:
Why not search for cleaning jobs in the transport industry?
Intrigued by the suggestion, Marcus decided to give it a shot.
After several interviews, he landed a cleaning job with a major train company in London.
The duties were similar, but being surrounded by trains each day reignited his motivation and happiness.
His productivity soared, and he maintained perfect attendance.
His supervisor noticed this transformation and suggested he apply for an internal management training program.
Despite the barrier of limited English, the company supported him by funding English classes.
Soon, he applied for the program – and got in!

Finding Your Career Interests
Marcus’ story illustrates how working in a field you care about can significantly enhance your motivation, wellbeing, and productivity.
Now, it’s your turn to explore your interests.
Here are some questions to get you started:
- What are you truly passionate about?

If you’re feeling uncertain, don’t worry!
Engaging in some reflective exercises can help uncover your key interests.
